Overview:  Major precipitation systems determine most of the global and regional precipitation amounts and are a major source of latent heating for the atmosphere. This course will discuss various precipitation systems such as supercell thunderstorms, mesoscale convective systems, orographic precipitation, northeast winter storms, monsoons storms, and hurricanes.

Overview:  Major precipitation systems determine most of the global and regional precipitation amounts and are a major source of latent heating for the atmosphere. This course will discuss various precipitation systems such as supercell thunderstorms, mesoscale convective systems, orographic precipitation, northeast winter storms, monsoons storms, and hurricanes. The course focuses on what are the dominant multi-scale kinematic and microphysical processes that determine intensity and spatial distribution of precipitation combing observations from field campaign and results from numerical simulations. The course will consist of critical review of current literature focusing on lessons learned from previous studies and open questions to be addressed in future experiments.
